Retina Youth, supported by Retina NZ, in collaboration with Blind & Low Vision NZ and Access Alliance are proud to present International White Cane Awareness Day!
This event will take place on Tuesday October 15th from 3pm til 6pm at the Auckland Blind Foundation, located at 4 Maunsell Rd, Parnell, Auckland. Retina can help with transport from Auckland or Hamilton – but an early RSVP is a must! If you’re interested in attending please email youth@retina.org.nz .
So what will we be doing?
-
- An Orientation & Mobility expert from Blind & Low Vision NZ to answer you or your friends and family’s questions about canes.
-
- We will be designing (with, or without, volunteer help) our dream custom canes – and bringing those designs to life when we actually make the canes at an event later this year (date to be confirmed).
- If that all sounds too much, we will also have space to chill and just chat and get to know other cane-users, perhaps over one of a selection of accessible board and card games?
All are welcome – whether you’re a novice cane-user or a seasoned professional. We encourage you to bring your cane, some friends and family, and some food for a casual afternoon meet up – some drinks and nibbles will be provided but feel free to bring your own.
Retina Youth really wants every single one of us to feel proud when we strut the streets with our canes in hand – by being visible and educating the people around us we hope this event will be one step towards a future that’s easy and accessible for everyone, everywhere.
